WHAT IS HAVAN?
Havan in Sanskrit (Sanskrit: हवन) means ” To Offer, To Give.” It is also known as Yagya, Homa, Yajna-Agnihotra, or Yajna – and is an elaborate system of rituals that has survived for centuries.
This is an ancient custom that came from the Vedic Culture and later spread throughout the world. We can meet varieties of this rite of passage in culture different countries and peoples. In the Bible there is a detailed description of how Yagya should be carried out in a particular case to be cleansed from sins.
During Havan, a certain method of invoking the Divine presence into the fire is used. Which includes various offerings and gifts offered to the fire and accompanied by sacred chants (Mantras). Through fire offerings we reach the Gods. It is also interesting to note that in many religions the fire ritual is an ancient practice of worshipping God in fire.
Fire can be compared to the ideal messenger, envoy (in connection with which fire is called Vahni). What is thrown into the flames as an offering is a symbolic expression of the worshippers’ love and their appeal to the Gods; the mantras act as the “address” to which the offering is sent, and the fire accepts the offerings, and by burning them, elevates to the higher realms the worshippers’ feelings, attitudes, intentions, and requests – the subtle component of the sacrifice.
Since fire has an infinite number of tongues of flame, it is believed that all the Gods are embodied in it, and through fire any Devine Deity (Devata) can be worshipped. The worship of Devatas through fire is very effective for achieving both material and spiritual goals, that is why this practice does not stop today. In the place where a correctly committed Havan, there is a favorable atmosphere, which gives good to all living things, people, animals, and plants. Havan, done in the right frame of mind, is a very natural way of human interaction with Nature, and Nature responds with joy.
There are many kinds of Havan. The Vedas describe 400 different types of fire sacrifice. The goal of Havan can be to improve a certain sphere of human life, to overcome the negative impact of the planets, to fulfill certain desires. However, THE ONLY TRUE BENEFIT THAT A PERSON CAN RECEIVE FROM THE SACRED RITUAL OF HAVAN IS THE PURIFICATION OF CONSCIOUSNESS AND UNION WITH GOD (YOGA).
It is no accident that in many religions fire is considered a sacred link connecting man with the Divine. The worship of God in fire is a wonderful method of purification, inner transformation and revelation of the Divine. As a resonance, the inner fire of wisdom burns within us all the superficial and far-fetched, filling our mind with peace and bliss.
WHY HAVAN?
The Vedas teach that the Gods come to the fire in response to the prayers of spiritual seekers. Even if one meditates without the outer fire, the Gods on whom one meditates come into the inner fire of the meditator and perceive the mantras through his inner fire. However, in most people, the inner fire is much weaker than the outer one. Therefore, worship with the help of external fire has great advantages. Ultimately, this practice strengthens the inner fire.
We all see and feel our Physical Body (Sthula-Sharira), which is composed of gross matter. But we also have the Subtle Body (Sukshma-Sharira), which is composed of subtle matter. It cannot be perceived by the senses of the gross physical body (eyes, ears, nose, etc.). It contains thousands of Nadis, which are essentially subtle channels of energy flows. This energy is called the Biological Fire (Bhutagni), which is constantly burning in the subtle body. It is the subtle basis of all being. In the gross body this fire manifests itself in various forms. Examples are the fire in the stomach, which helps digest food, and the fire of the brain, which helps to comprehend the meaning of what is happening. Therefore, the fire Bhutagni, is vital for any person. In most people, it is severely weakened. Because of the blockage of the channels of the subtle body, this fire cannot burn at full strength to fully provide a person with energy. Under low burning Bhutagni the divine presence in human is very limited. If you overcome the inner weaknesses (desires, anger, greed, delusion, intoxication and envy), develop compassion, concentrate devotion to God, detach oneself, lose the covering of false ego and delusions, then the contamination of the channels of the subtle body is eliminated and Bhutagni burns in full force.
However, this practice is very difficult and time consuming. Therefore, to achieve success, you can use the external fire. Because during Havan the deity enters the external fire, your presence near the divine presence leads to the burning of Nadis contamination, up to the purification of various kinds of karma in the Causal Body (past actions that will bring corresponding reactions in the future). This eventually leads to the strengthening of Bhutagni. As a result, everyone who performs the Havan for a long time, the Nadis are cleansed of impurities and the Bhutagni burns brightly. Then all spiritual practices, including regular meditation, become the most effective.
If Bhutagni is filled with the divine presence to an even greater degree, meditation becomes even more effective. The purpose of all Spiritual Practices (SADHANAS), in whatever terms they are not designated, is to purify all internal impurities. The various karmas of previous lives are in the Causal Body (Karana Sharira), making it heavy. These karmas are manifested in the subtle body (Sukshma Sharira), as pollution of various subtle channels, blocking the free flow of energy. In the Gross body (Sthula Sharira) they are manifested as various physical and mental problems. They are the causes of the immersion of consciousness in the ocean of delusions. Because of the previous karmas, consciousness acquires the conditioning known as Maya. When a person is immersed in Maya, he is attacked and led astray by 6 enemies – Desire (Kama), Anger (Krodha), Greed (Lobha), Delusion (Moha), Intoxication (Mada) and Envy (Madsarya). If the practitioner makes spiritual progress, the karma in the Causal Body is burned, the Nadis (Channels) are cleansed of impurities, mental conditioning is weakened, and he can effectively resist internal enemies. All this is interconnected and happens simultaneously. After the combustion of karma, each practitioner becomes karmically very easy and inaccessible to the machinations of internal enemies. When a practitioner sees everything as God, nothing can make him envious or mislead. The conditioning of the mind decreases. Now no one and nothing can excite or distress him. He is constantly in bliss. Despite the change of work and environment, his inner state remains unchanged. It is the attainment of such a state that is the goal of all spiritual practices. Whether it is achieved through
knowledge and wisdom (Jnana) or devotion and renunciation (Bhakti), or both, in either case it is necessary to burn karma and all the impurities that block the attainment of this state. The purpose of practice (Sadhana) is that the ego (sense of self) is fully United with the Divine. This is yoga. If the practitioner is able to create a vacuum within himself, the Divine Presence instantly fills the void. As long as one has egoism with different kinds of Tendencies, Inclinations, and Habits of Mind (Vasanas), such a vacuum cannot be created.
When all Vasanas are destroyed, one gets rid of tendencies, inclinations and habits. The mind becomes extremely calm and a vacuum is created within it. Then the Divine Presence fills the practitioner and he attains indescribable bliss. Havan (Yagya) facilitates this process by quickly igniting the layers of impurities that impede spiritual progress. Many Vedic rituals involve invoking the Divine Presence in the Murti (lit. “manifestation” – a statue or image of a certain form of God, Virgin or Saint), or in a ritual vessel (Kalash). And then worship is offered to the Murti or vessel. Unfortunately, we live in the Kali Yuga, when the elements of earth, water and air are impure. If during the making or thoughts of the sculptor, the Murti (statue) gets any pollution, then they will greatly limit the Divine Presence.
The only elements that are not subject to desecration are Either Space (Akasha) and fire (Agni). It is very difficult to perform spiritual Sadhana (practice) through Either Space. Thus, the best medium for spiritual Sadhana is fire. Pāvaka (पावक) is one of the Sanskrit words for fire, which means “purifying”. Fire is by definition pure and purifies everything it touches. The wood or coconut shell used to keep the fire going may have impurities, but the fire itself is exceptionally pure, and provides a Divine Presence in the highest degree.
THE SECRET OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF HAVAN
There are two basic energy systems in the physical world: heat and sound. In performing Havan, these two energies, namely, the heat from Havan fire and the sound of the chanting Vedic Mantras, are blended together to achieve the desired physical, psychological and spiritual benefits. The secret of the effectiveness of Havan is in the subtle vibrations caused by the chanting of certain Vedic sounds, Mantras, because our entire universe at the subtlest, deepest level of its existence is a set of certain vibrations. This is confirmed by both the ancient doctrine of the universe and the latest discoveries of Quantum Physics. Thus, the vibrations of the mantras affect the subtle fabric of the universe, neutralizing the negative vibrations present and strengthening the positive ones.
The mantras used for Havan are composed by ancient Vedic sages called Rishis. (Translated from Sanskrit, “Rishi” means “Seer”, i.e. a person who sees life, has the ability to see the whole nature of the universe, its activity and the unity of everything with everything.) The power of sound vibrations is long since acknowledged in the field of science. These vibrations can penetrate the energy spheres at the subtle and cosmic levels. All the alphabets of the Sanskrit language are endowed with special vibrational powers, which set out harmonious wave patterns when pronounced. It is interesting to note that an American Scientist has established that recitation of Gayatri Mantra produces 110,000 sound waves per second.
Yagya creates a pure, nutritional and medicinal atmosphere. It renews the brain cells, revitalizes the skin, purifies blood and prevents growth of pathogenic organisms. Havan is basically a healing process. ‘Heal the atmosphere and the healed atmosphere will heal you’. Purification of environment through the constituent electrons of the substances fumigated in the Havan is an obvious effect of this process.
A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF HAVAN
Vedic philosophy considers the meaning of Karma as follows. Everything that happens in your life – good and bad, positive and negative, successful and unsuccessful, prosperous and ineffectual, pleasant and the painful are all the consequences of our past actions, that is, Karma.
Havan in this case is the most favorable way to neutralize negative karma, as well as creating positive karma for the future.
Our present is shaped by the actions of our past; accordingly, the actions of our present determine our future (from Vedic literature).
In fact, when Havan is performed using special rituals and chanting mantras, the vibrations of human energy as if woven and intertwined again. This method is the oldest and at the same time progressive means of human evolution.
WHY IS HAVAN A VERY APPROPRIATE PRACTICE IN THIS AGE OF KALI-YUGA
During Havan, the Deity to whom you offer sacrifice enters the fire. Your presence near the Divine Fire kindles the inner fire in Your subtle body, thereby burning impurities and purifying from various kinds of karma. This, in turn, makes other spiritual practices (such as meditation) more effective.
WHAT PROBLEMS ARE SOLVED WITH THE HELP OF HAVAN?
Havan contributes to the treatment of diseases, the elimination of enemies, the attraction of Divine help for solving problems (which cannot be solved by conventional methods) and helps to calm the souls of the dead. What seems impossible, in fact, it can be achieved with the help of Havan.
In the Vedic Scriptures it is said that with its help you can achieve peace, prosperity, wealth, health, and in general, the overall improvement of life.
- Almost everything. Ranging from private health problems, problems in relationships with loved ones, work, non-repayment of debts, uncoordinated personal life, the absence of family and children, the elimination of various obstacles … the Purpose of the Havan can be to increase both material well-being and prosperity, success in business, and spiritual development, the acquisition of the highest wisdom, and unconditional Love.
- Unawareness. Lack of proper protection and balance in life, energy centers. If we are not in the moment now, then we are subject to the diverse forces of the Universe and actually do not live, so our life and our relationships with others are unreal and imbued with illusion, all life is a continuous mechanical glitch that happens.
- Generic programs. It often happens that love in the family does not move as it should-grandmother-mother-daughter, but otherwise. This is called the broken order of love – when love moves not where it should. What does it threaten and what does it affect? If you have broken the rules of love — you either do not feel loved, or cannot normally love your children and younger family members. Havan (or rather the Lord himself, through Havan) can build the order of love in the right relation and will touch the divine Source.
